Hello! I am Jesse Miller, owner of Miller Ridge Farms along with my wife Catie. We are very proud of the quality grass fed beef we provide to our clients. Neither Catie or I had a background in farming, other than taking care of some pet rabbits, when we decided to begin this journey. We both had a love of the land and the beauty of this area, as well as a desire to prove to ourselves that we could run our own farm. As for the decision to go the grass fed route as opposed to conventional farming, it just makes sense that if you crowd a bunch of animals into a small space and feed them some scientifically developed food you are playing with fire. I spent a great deal of time talking to other ranchers about their operations and learning all I that I could. I found that everyone has an opinion and the truth lies somewhere in the middle. I believe there’s always more to learn and I think that as long as I don’t assume to “know it all”, I will be better off. Like anything, raising cattle is a learning process and we continuously strive to make our product the best that it can possibly be.
We love the solitude of this place we’ve made together. I grew up in a neighborhood in Lee’s Summit, MO with great neighbors and Catie grew up in the St. Louis area. It’s a totally different life out here but there is nothing better than cresting our hill and approaching our little place after a stressful day at work. In addition, I think we have built tighter relationships with the few neighbors we do have compared to friends we know who live in their subdivided neighborhoods.
The most rewarding thing about ranching by far is telling someone what we do and them asking “Is it a family farm?” No, it is not. This is ours, and we pour everything we have into it. The hardest part is staying positive when things get tough. It is no different than anyone else trying to make a go of something on their own, but sometimes we lose animals, or they get hurt and it not only takes a financial toll, but an emotional one at that.
At the end of the day, the hope is to provide you the consumer with a quality product. It’s as simple and as difficult as that. Our blood, sweat, tears and the best intentions go into what we do. When you choose our grass fed beef, you support a sustainable and more environmentally friendly product and you support a small family farm business. For that, we offer our sincere thanks!
